Title: My 95.5 UrS6 Avant *now undecided*
Post by: SpeedyDTP247 on March 28, 2010, 08:56:40 PM
Today jaustin (Jesse) and I headed out to Ada so I can buy the UrS6 Avant which I talked about briefly here (http://motorcityaudi.com/forums/index.php?topic=7765.0). It has 238,xxx miles and 1 cylinder with low compression. I did buy a spare AAN motor that I plan on building up to replace the current motor. Its Europa Blue with Platinum interior.

Here is a run down on what upgrades were added by the previous owners (there might be more but this is all that I can think of this moment).
~ RS2 turbo and manifold
~ Lehmann stage 1 chipset with 2.5 bar PT *replaced with MRC RS2 chipset w/VMAP set @ 3 bar*
~ Koni shocks and ABT springs
~ Custom aftermarket stereo system
~ BBS RC wheels *sold*
~ S6+ big brake kit
~ ABT rear muffler *sold*

Here is my plans for the Avant (not in any particular order).
~ Euro headlights *done*
~ HID kit *done*
~ Right Click Switchblade Keyless Entry click here if you wanna buy 1 for yourself (http://www.rclick.co.uk/) *done*
~ 6 speed tranny
~ Get the wood trim redone in piano black *swapped out the wood trim to carbon fiber instead*
~ Rebuild the spare AAN motor *rebuilt the spare head and its currently on the avant*
~ Stromung exhaust *done*
~ Have the whole avant repainted
~ Clear corner lights *done*
~ FMIC *Treadstone Performance TR1035 core. need to piece the rest together*
~ Install my euro taillight center piece from my UrS4 *done*
~ Install my 928 GTS BBK from my pearl UrS4 I originally bought for *sold*
~ Black interior swap *only did black seats and like the 2 tone look*
~ Upgrade power *now running with MRC RS2 chipset w/VMAP set @ 3 bar (sold this chipset)*
~ Upgrade ignition system *swapped into my old UrS4 and now sold*
~ Upgrade the clutch *waiting to be installed*

Here is a few pics that I took.

jaustin's B6 A4 avant and my UrS6 avant @ Applebee's.

Spare AAN motor that I'm going to build up. *rebuilt*

Here is some info of me getting into the Audi scene. back in 2003 i was looking to buy a car that i could drive year round. a friend of mine told me to get a awd car. so i did a search on autotrader and came across a 98 Audi A4. it had everything that i was looking for, awd, a 5 speed, leather, power windows and locks, sunroof and cruise control. i headed out to grand rapids to take the car for a test drive and fell in love with it right away cause it felt solid and looks great. so i ended up buying that car and it became my very 1st Audi ever. click here to see what i've done with it during my ownership (http://www.motorcityaudi.com/forums/index.php/topic,8117.0.html).

During my ownership of that car another friend told me about audiworld.com and i signed up. i quickly learned that i should've bought a A4 with the 1.8t motor since there is WAY more power upgrades over the V6 motor. oh well i made due with what i had. also during this ownership i became interested in the older Audi cars especially in the Audi Coupe Quattro. i saw 1 in the wild at our local dealership and thought to myself i must have one cause i love the classic looks.

i did some research on the Audi CQ and found out that its pretty rare and that really sparked my interest in buying one. i test drove 1 in grand rapids and test drove 1 that was in waterford. i ended up buying the 1 in waterford because it already had alot of mods that i would do if i bought one completely stock. click here to see what i've done with it during my ownership (http://motorcityaudi.com/forums/index.php?topic=1758.0). not long after i bought CQ i ended up selling my A4 because i quit driving it. after i sold the A4 i wanted to buy another Audi so can focus on restoring the CQ.

i began my search for new daily driver and came across a 93 Audi UrS4 near chicago. i took the money i had from selling my A4 and drove out to chicago to check out the UrS4 and looked it over and was shocked how clean it was and bought it. i quit driving my CQ cause it had a nagging issue trying to start. plus i fell in love with this UrS4 because it was faster then the CQ, had WAY more comfortable seats and felt way more solid. the only problem that i ran into with my ownership of this car is that it was way to clean to drive it in the winter. i didnt drive this car in the winter and was going to use my CQ as a winter beater but that never happend cause of the stupid starting issue. click here to see what i've done with it during my ownership (http://motorcityaudi.com/forums/index.php?topic=4606.0).

during the ownership of both the CQ and UrS4 i couldnt afford to keep both cars so i decided to sell both of them. before i sold both cars i came across a 95 Audi UrS6 avant and i wanted it cause i fell in love with Audi avants and always wanted one.

so here is my project page of my current Audi and i want to keep this on the road as long as i can because its everything i need in a vehicle.

i finally got a rust free hatch!! thanks Jim for picking this up for me!!! sorry for the crappy cell pic, its green btw.

cant decide on which wheels to dedicate for summer use and winter use. both are 17" x 8" wheels. i'm thinking about using the AR1's for summer use because i have a thing for wheels with lips. i know that the RC's weigh lighter then the AR1's and would benifit with better fuel economy over the AR1's.

Here is the new hatch installed.

I need to mod the inner part of the hatch so i can install the inner panel. next week the avant will get new tint on the hatch and the rest of the windows will get retinted.
Title: Re: My UrS6 Avant *new window tints and new exhaust!!!*
Post by: SpeedyDTP247 on July 13, 2010, 11:25:07 PM
these 3 pics below show why i retinted my windows. who ever did the tint did a terrible job since the tint didnt cover the whole window and they use electrical tape.

the next 5 pics below show the old exhaust system. this avant came with a rear abt muffler.

yes, you'll be seeing this avant when i stop by to sell you the wheels. i'm not running a blow off valve nor will i ever. it has a stock bypass valve. the sound that you hear in one of the vids is probably the wastegate.

Thank you Jesse for helping me remove the old seats and installing the new to me black UrS4 seats.

the old seats removed and i was pretty shocked that it was pretty darn clean under the seats.

both seats now installed and let me tell you these seat feel way more supportive then the ones i took out! i spent a little time cleaning them up but i need to clean them up more. i'm thinking now i want to just get black seats and rock the 2 tone look for awhile. the black seats in my old UrS4 are nicer then these and i'm tempted to steal them back lol

A company called "Leatherique" sells a great product, leather conditionner  that you spread on the leather for a few days till the leather is saturated, then a leather cleaner that removes all the crap brought to the surface by the conditionner and then a leather dye in black and voila the seats look new.
It really makes the leather nice and soft again, it feeds the cowhide.
Looking good, the 2 tone will be Ok but make sure you replace the rear seats, if not it will look junky.
Nice ride

Post by: SpeedyDTP247 on December 01, 2010, 11:04:56 PM
here's alittle update on my avant. she's been down at Jim's since Nov. 17 getting a rebuilt head installed. i took off the head from my spare motor and had it rebuilt. i was talking about my low compression issue that this motor has with the guys on QW and Brad (ThetaTau87) thinks its the head thats causing my low compression issue.

heres 2 pics i took (via cell phone) while i was down at Jim's tonight to drop off my new reman alternator since the old one had a bad bearing. i figured with 249,xxx miles might as well replace it.

Jim said the block looks pretty good for its milage.

i'm going to have my co-work take the head apart because i'm curious what it looks like inside.

Jim finished my avant today (thanks so much Jim) and she's now back home 8) i really didnt get a chance to drive her hard because the roads were bad and heavy traffic on the way back, so i really couldnt gauge if i got some power back.

1 half of the rear seats from a UrS6 avant came in today and the other half will be here tomorrow.

i got to push the avant hard today and she does pull a bit stronger.

i swapped out the rear seat backs to the black ones. now i'm waiting on is the bottom cushion which was rescheduled for delivery for tomorrow. not sure why, stupid ups :cussing:

the best thing about the euro lights are the city lights

did a leak test on my old cyl head and cyl # 3 had the biggest leaking problem. i found this surprising because from the receipt book that has test results from a compression/leak down test showing that cyl # 5 had a problem.

i will report back once the rest of the old cyl head gets taken apart.

i got the euro headlights and the HID kit installed today. one thing i'm kinda bummed about is that one lense is cloudy as is the projector lense too. i need to figure out how to fix this cause its annoying! i dont have the city lights wired up yet because i havent bought LED bulbs yet. i also dont have the euro headlight pigtail which has a wire that i can tap into to wire up the city lights, so that means i have to cut a little hole in the back of the housing and feed a wire thru to wire up the city lights. i want to wire up my city lights to turn on when the ignition is turned on and then turned off once i turn on the headlights.  i'll post pics soon.

Cloudy -- or does it have condensation? If there's condensation, make sure the passages for the breather tubes aren't obstructed. Sometimes the plastic where the rubber breather boot attaches to still has plastic  molding remnants that obstructs the hole.

Post by: SpeedyDTP247 on December 22, 2010, 10:17:34 PM
i've been having this nagging coolant leak thats been driving me nuts. i finally got a metal t-stat housing, new coolant hose for the t-stat housing and good used coolant hose from Jim for the hose that goes to the heater core. when i was down at Jim's last night to pick up the metal t-stat housing i had Jim show me what i needed to do to install the housing and i pointed to the hose thats right behind the t-stat housing hose and asked what its for. he said its for the heater core and i asked if he had a coolant hose that i could cut to lenght to replace that hose since i'm replacing the t-stat housing and hose hoping it would fix my coolant leak. once i got that hose off for the heater core i noticed that it had 1 big crack which was causing my coolant leak. pic below showing the hose that was causing my coolant leak. that big crack you see couldnt be seen because it was on the opposite side of where i made the cut to remove the hose and that hole was facing the engine block so there was no way of seeing that hole at all. i also replaced the old hose clamps with new one for good measure.

this pic below shows the good used coolant hose that i shorten to replace that heater core hose.

bought a couple of items shortly after x-mas.

RS2 replica injectors. i still need to buy RS2 stg 3 chipset with 3 bar VMAP.

034 high flow silicone turbo inlet hose

this scared me after taking the old turbo inlet hose off. mind you this RS2 was installed new at 29,649 miles and now my avant has 251,000 miles. that means this turbo has 221,351 miles on her. there is a bit of shaft play front to back and side to side when i checked for shaft play.

yesterday i sent out my ecu to EFI Express to have the MRC RS2 chipset and VMAP installed and set at 3 bar. i'm not exactly sure what particular MRC chipset it is but Marc said it came out of a UrS car that had a RS2 turbo with RS2 injectors and it made 28 psi. i should be getting my ecu back some time in the middle of next week. i cant wait ;D

Wait, 28 psi?  I hope you are able to check everything out with a wideband O2 sensor before you really stomp on it.

i'm really not worried. MRC RS2 chips run on the rich side. i think Marc ment to say it max'd to 28 psi. i'm guessing it runs in the 24-26 psi range? i wont know til i get my ecu back.

i have a feeling that i need to upgrade to Marc's LS2 ignition system kit

yup. the chipset is from a well known company and i bought it from a well known tuner. i thought only wideband can only be used with standalone ecu's meaning that it'll give you wideband readout opposed to narrowband read out if setup with stock ecu thats been chipped?

i had my ecu sent out to Marc at EFI Express to get the Lehmann stage 1 chipset with 2.5 bar PT that was in there removed and installed a MRC RS2 chipset with adjustable VMAP set at 3 bar. while the ecu was out i installed a new fuel filter and new RS2 replica injectors.

tonight i started to disassemble my avant. i'm taking my time doing that and only doing a little bit at a time so i dont get burnt out during the process. i cant wait to have this engine bay overhaul completed. it'll be all nice and clean under the hood :icon_rr:

all i did was take out the air box and all the intercooler system parts minus the IC core itself.

when i removed the MM hose, alot of oil poured out :(

next on the list is to drain the engine oil so i can start removing the turbocharger and also drain the cooling system so i can start removing those parts. i'll be taking lots of pics throughout the this process.

*update*

since i've been back from my vacation i havent done anything with my avant. i was hoping to get her to the body shop before i went on my vacation but that didnt happen. i had no days off during this week so she'll have to sit til next thurs which is my next day off during the week. there are a ton more stuff i need to buy to get the spare motor rebuilt.

i sooooooo cant wait to get her finished so i can enjoy driving again. i'm having withdrawls :'(

well she'll be running like new again.

boy let me tell you that it was a pain in the butt loading her on the trailer. this is my 1st time ever loading a vehical on a trailer. it was a pain the butt because the trailer had a hand crank to pull the avant up. i was fighting it up a incline to get on the trailer and then once i got in on there, i wasnt thinking cause i was exhausted, the drive way was sloped down and the avant rolled to the very front of the trailer. i had to use ratching tie straps to pull the avant back far enough so the front trailer where the crank is for the part that holds up the trailer when not in use wasnt scrapping the ground when i started to drive away.

i dont want to do this again. when the avant is done i'm just going to call a tow company to pick it up with a roll back and have it taken back to my parents house.

i sent out my RS2 turbo to get rebuilt and during its tear down it was noticed that the compressor wheel was rubbing the housing :( now i'm on the search for a good used OEM RS2 compressor wheel and housing.

got word back on my RS2 turbo from Marc "talked to the rebuilder today, he is of the opinion that you will not be able to notice the difference between using a new wheel and re-using your old one. so my suggestion would be to just use what you've got." this saves me the headach of find a good use compressor wheel and housing and also saves me money.

i stopped at the body shop to check up on my avant and they said to hopefully had it done next week. i doubt that'll happen because my avant is still sitting in the same location where we unloaded it when i dropped it off 3 weeks ago.

i also stopped at the performance shop that'll be reassembling my block and they said they havent got to it yet because their finishing up a project that they need to get done before they start on my motor.

so now i'm just waiting
Title: Re: My RS2'd UrS6 Avant *waiting game now*
Post by: Castle on May 19, 2011, 06:42:48 PM
um...if it is the compressor wheel that is rubbing the housing isn't that likely to create particles headed into your engine?  That sounds a bit scarey to me.

I assume the bearings were replaced so there's no more wobble that would cause the turbine to housing contact.

if it was creating metal particles into the engine, it wont be a issue anymore since that motor is out of the avant.

thats correct. my RS2 is getting a complete rebuild which means new bearings

Nice project.
The hard part is waiting and waiting for things to get done. It took my 90 coupe over 2 years to get done, would not wish the same nightmare on my worst enemy!
Hope it all come together soon.
Once they start the paint, it should be really fat to do the engine compartment, same with the engine rebuilt.
Where did you order all the new coolant hoses from? I think I am due to replace mine and would like to do every single one.
Thanks
Francois

thanks.

yes waiting is the hardest part i hope it doesnt take me 2 years even though it seems like its been 2 years lol. the body shop is only cleaning up the engine bay and fixing up some rusted areas. we decided not to do a complete engine bay repaint because there is too much items in the way that needs to be removed and it was going to cost a lot of money which i dont have.

i bought the new coolant hoses from 034. its their silicone hose kit (http://www.034motorsport.com/engine-components-audi-i5-20vt-silicone-hose-set-coolant-c4-aan-s4-p-18016.html)

I have had to redo a few things on it, just last week end had to remove the braket for the PS pump and alternator, the welds they had done on it broke. so I had to grind it and make sure there was good penetration of the new weld, I added a second reinforcement also. If not it finally runs well, added a secondary switch to turn fan on at will since thecar was getting hot in slow traffic. Much better now, but I would never do it again!

well today i was talking to the tool guy that stops by our shop on fridays about buying measuring tool to do the block reassemble and he told me about this shop that can do the work and their reasonable in price. i'll be calling them monday. we'll see what happens.

i still havent got the car back from the body shop :'( talked to them today and they said it should be done next week and i should be able to pick it on my day off which is thursday.

weird that the steel bracket broke. what caused it to break? i'm not a fan of aluminum brackets because i've had some break in the past and had them replaced with steel or had a steel one made like i had done for my A4.

what did the shop say that you called today?
what shop?

if your wondering why i didnt start on cleaning and then painting these parts towards the beginning.....is because i forgot about it since i've been trying to get the body shop and engine shop to get working on and finished what i wanted done. plus working 50+ hours a week of hard work has made me lazy and tired to do much of anything. also i've been working on personal issues that has distracted me from working on my project. so all in all with all of this going on i've lost motivation and intrest on this project :'(

i'm not going to give up on this project but i have a feeling that it's not going to be done by the time the snow flies. also being low on money isnt helping any :(

Post by: SpeedyDTP247 on December 10, 2011, 11:25:15 PM
my new clutch came in yesterday. i bought a Stage 3 Endurance Series south bend clutch kit.

i cant install it yet because i'm waiting on the other package to get here that has the flywheel bolts. hopefully it'll get here before this coming up weekend. if it does i'll be able to get the clutch installed and begin putting the motor back into the avant.

a list of things that got done so far. new steering dampener, reman brake servo, rebuilt steering rack, rebuilt power steering pump, new sensors, rebuilt RS2 turbo, reman starter, low milage rebuilt brake bomb, new clutch slave cylinder

yesterday Jim stopped up to help out with installing the clutch slave cylinder. holy crap was this a pain in the arse to do even with the motor out. i would hate to do that job with the motor in.

friday at work i cleaned up the surface rust on the flywheel and pressed out the pilot bearing and pressed in the new one. Jim helped out with installing the flywheel and got the alignment tool in and clutch disc install. we got the pressure plate partly installed with 2 screws which i'm not sure are the correct ones so we called it a day. afterwards i went to the dealership to order new pressure plate screws. so putting the motor back into the engine bay will have to wait longer.

i got to pick up my new pressure plate bolts on wed and yesterday after work i got everything centered up (it was a pain to get it centered and hold it there in place) and used a couple of the old bolts to get it started and hold it while i put blue loc tight on the new bolts and screw them down. i got all the new bolts snugged up and torqued them to spec. (sorry for the crappy cell pic) now she sits and waits til i find all the bolts needed to mount the engine to the bell housing

gosh i wish i wasnt a dumb@$$ and leave most of the nuts and bolts in a pile and some others scattered around :BangHead:

Jesse stopped by to help get the engine back in and get it bolted up but i called it a day since we couldnt line up the block to the bell housing perfectly to bolt it together and didnt want to get more frusturated then i was at the time. i still need to figure out my bell housing bolts.

not much happend since my last post. i spent some time trying to figure out what i was hanging up on and posted about my issue on QW. one thing was to double check to see if i had the right pressure plate maybe its the wrong size and hitting againt the bell housing. i took the motor back out and held up my old PP next to the new one and eye balled it and they look to be the same thickness. so thats not the issue. one member suggested to take the clutch slave cylinder out and put the motor back in to see it'll sit against the bell housing. i've been to lazy to get the motor back in.

ok its time for an update on the old girl. early last i bought a used T04E/k26 turbo from a member on the QW boards and i did meet him in our caravan to S-Fest. When he bought the car it had a unknown turbo because it had no numbers on it and he posted about it on QW and the figured out that it was a T04E/k26 turbo. after S-Fest his motor crapped out on him and he upgraded everything and went with a bigger turbo. he took the turbo off the car and took it apart to find any marking on it to find more info about it. when he took it apart he accidently broke the stud on the coldside wheel.

he posted it for sale and i saw that it was for sale as is or he was going to rebuild it and sell it at a higher price. i emailed him asking that i wanted to buy it as is. so he sold it to me. i was going to get it rebuilt with billet wheels to cut down on the turbo lag. i got the turbo and decided to wait on getting it rebuilt.

i took this pic after i got the RS2 (on the right) turbo pulled off the avant.

i've been saving up my money the last few months and also got my tax return back i decided to send out the t04e/k26 turbo to get rebuilt. Marc got my turbo and said he didnt like dealing with the customer service of Comp Turbo and said he had a gt3071r chra he could sell me. so i went ahead and bought it.

while i was waiting for the turbo. i bought a new EM. i ended up buying the 034 H.O. RS2 EM with a T3 flange so if i decide to upgrade to a bigger turbo i wont be limited on what i can buy. since i bought that EM. i had Marc find me a T3 turbo housing so it can be bolted up the new EM. also i sent out my DP to get remodified to be a full 3" DP. the hotside housing that Marc recieved wasnt the right size he needed so he had to get the right one which ended up having a v-band and upgraded the DP to accept the v-band from the turbo housing.

last year i sent out my RS2 turbo to get built and Marc sent it out to get it rebuilt and the rebuilder found out that the turbo started to rub against the housing. i had the turbo rebuilt anyways because it would've been extreamly hard to find replacement parts. the turbo had over 230,000 miles on it. when i upgraded my chip set it must have put strain on the high milage turbo and must have caused it to start rubbing on the housing.

i got the turbo back i was going to use that turbo for awhile until i could afford to rebuild the T04E/k26 turbo. since i got that turbo rebuilt als. i ended up selling my RS2 turbo and RS2 EM. i'll be using that money towards buying the 034 Rip Chip (reprogramable) that became available! click here to learn more about this amazing chip upgrade! Time for a long over due update on my project. i have thoughts about giving up on this project but Jim said he would help finish it for me late last year. A couple of months ago he came up and picked up my avant to take it to his house.

she's on her way to get finished.

the GT3071R turbo got installed.

i recently bought a new oil cooler and hardware to replace the stock oil cooler

i also bought a oil cooler to replace the stock power steering cooler line. also bought some new coolant hoses

parts from 034. oil catch can, relay harness for ignition coils, fuel pressure gauge and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, n75 valve, diverter valve and oil pressure switch

there are more parts that i need to buy.

Update time. Shorty after Jim picked up my avant he had to stop working on my avant because I ran out of money for this project so it sat at his place until it was time for him to bring it back home. A lot has happend while my avant has been away. I got married and I bought my very first house which has a nice size detached garage. I sold the RIP Chip and the 928 GTS calpiers and took some stuff off my avant that is currently on my UrS4.

My avant finally came back home (gone for 21 months) and will sit in my garage for awhile until I can afford to buy what I need to buy to finish it. For the time being there is some things I can work on that Jim didnt do because I ran out of money for him to any more work then what he's got into it. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

*update* nothing happened since the avant came back home to me. I've been either too busy or too tired from work to think about working on avant. I've been thinking about doing personal loan so I can buy everything I need to finish this project but as of right now its something a cant afford to do :'(

Ruh-roh! I decided to sell the engine as I'm planning on something different whether its a different power plant or just completely parting it out.
