Direct Injection and Catch Cans
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:56:41 PM »
Interesting read on why a catch can might be a good idea/or may not be needed if you buy a direct injected car.  I know this problem has crippled many RS4s making them prone to beatings by lesser cars.

Great article . . . This was one of the reasons why I sold my S4 and went for something more simple.

good post.  Sounds like the problem has been solved in most newer cars.  Watch out for first gen stuff as always.

Some people say a catch can works, others say it doesn't.  I expect at some point to have to have the valves cleaned, but the Turbo cars are not as bad as the RS4.  Also unkike the older EA133 2.0T FSI, my car does not burn a quart of oil every 1k miles. I haven't added any oil at all between changes actually.  No one has looked at the TSI engine yet to see how improved it is, but that quart of oil on the older engines went somewhere, and it didn't leak out.

Edmunds did some dyno runs on their long term GTI at arount 21K miles.  They also tried regular octane too to compare with 91.  The results were a little less power on regular, but still over 200 wheel HP.
