Jorgen, welcome! Glad you found us and are getting some ideas. I too thot of the cam position sensor. Same symptoms when that went intermittent on my SHO Taurus years ago.  Hope this takes care of it.

Wel I got back from the UP today and did a little more driving, things seem to be good.

Install wasn't the worst. I was able to do it in about 25 minutes on a set of ramps. If I didn't have to mess with the trays under the car it would have take about 10 minutes less. The only real problem though is that the bolt is a 5mm hex screw that was not coming out easily. I have to use my tiny pair of visegrips and get the outside of the head.
