84 Turbo 4K
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:43:16 AM »
I purchased this car last year if my memory serves me well, It was an pretty ugly looking 4K but the previous guy had put in a built 5cylinder 10 V motor in it, the car was done for him to have fun ice racing, for the cheap price I decided to get it and use it as a track car since now the boys are ready to beat on a car on the track, this would be perfect since I have a lot of spare 4K parts.
Well where is the project then ? he asked.
I have always wanted to attempt my own paint job, but was always scare to screw it up or to just jump in it, So there I did it over the last couple weeks, I stripped the car, fixed a few dings, left a couple as I the weather last week end was perfect for that, and I did not want to wait for the spring to do it.
So there it is my white paint job on what was a silver beat up paint job. A friend, Mark gave me some pointers, I did some research and ended up for the first job using a Dupont single stage urethane paint, It was so much fun that I went back the next day to the paint shop to buy some blue to do the stripe. I stayed away from the Audi color as That would have required 3 more days of nice weather to do the 3 colors on the car. Plus that is different.
I ended up covering the garage wall with plastic, cleaning the floors and wetting them before starting the paint.
It Actually came out great, there are NO RUNS! more than I cans ay about paint jobs I paid for!

So one down, This was a blast so I will do it again.

Nice!  Sounds like a good time getting your feet wet.

What equipment did you use to apply the paint?

What equipment did you use to apply the paint?

A friend loaned me a HLVP deVibliss gun, ran it with a couple moisture and oil removing filters using my 5HP compressor, due to the low pressure, the compressor kept up real nice.

Update, I received the sticker kit from a friend of Tim in the UP, the guy did a great job and I cannot believe the price!
so I spend a couple hours "pimping up" the car.
still have to remount the spoiler I painted today.
I am loving this paint gig!

Thanks, a little flashy but this is not driven on the road, I have some nice blue big mudflaps to install also, I think white coupe 90 wheels will be a must on this project.
I am making 2 tow hooks in the rear that will go where the bumper was installed, it was missing the front bumper so now we have cut weight! no bumpers.

New update, car is 99% done.
Finished installing the oil cooler, replaced the rear rotors and am waiting for new front ones, The previous owner installed G60 calipers and it took me a while to find the right rotors.
Front grill is a piece of a plastic grill from the Audi 100 from 1975, the front lights are from a 87 400 quattro, the 84 has the quad headlights and they get stuffed with snow in the winter and you can't see anything, so this upgrade is good.
The added light, Christian got them free from Mr. rally himself ( WG) and since his car is dead right now I made some brackets with 1/4" steel, powder coated them and they bolt where the bumpers use to.
Mudflaps installed, just have to make 2 tow hooks for the rear, hopefully tomorrow.
Ed took it for a test drive, put a smile on his face!

Great job, Francois! Looks and sounds good in person. Did you figure out what the running issue was? Or did got just clear itself up like when we were prepared to push it last month - and she started right up!

The previous owner had built it for ice racing, I was just having fun with the decorating.
new rotors came in so she should be ready for long test drives.
Pleases end me a link to the ice racing
