There's a high pressure side and a low.  Usually it's the blue one for the low side (at least on the A4 and Miata.

The car is a '93 S4.  I want to recharge the a/c instead of taking it to a garage. I can see the a/c compressor (mounted low on the drivers side front of the engine) and the hoses. From the a/c compressor it looks like the hoses go to an area under where the hydraulic reservoir and washer reservoir are. Do I have to remove those two things to get to the connections for recharging or is there an access panel in the drivers front wheel well? Or is it more easily accessed from underneath with the vehicle on a lift?

I love driving my S4 but warm a/c and temps in the low to mid 90's really sucks.

high side should be on the condenser and low side is on the compressor. You charge in the high side so you should be fine.

does your 93 have the r-12 or 134a system? my 93 S4 has the r-12 system and here is a pic to showing you how you can tell that you have r-12. see the a/c condenser has a funny looking top where it gets shorter towards the headlights.

here's a pic borrowed from JagerBomb from QW to show what the 134a system a/c condenser looks like

as Jarett mentioned the high side is on the condenser. and the low side for 134a is on the bottom lower back side of the compressor.

My S4 has the same condenser as the white S4 in the first pic. There is a sticker on the passenger side of the large black plastic cover below the windshield (cowling?) that says it was converted to R134a a few years back. I finally located the "low side" connector on the compressor. Where is the "high side" connector? Is it hidden behind something?

since your r-12 system has been converted to 134a it may have lost its cooling efficiency over the original r-12 that it came with. this has been talked about on QW. that 1st pic i posted is my 93 S4 with the r-12 system and all it does is blow warm air. i didnt get it fixed because some members on QW said i should find a shop that does r-12 work and have it recharged with r-12 freon substitute like freeze 12.

do you see the high side service port on the condenser? i wont get a chance to see where its located on my car til late tomorrow night. in my quick search on QW i couldnt find a pic or where its mentioned of its location
