Hot Turbo
« on: June 28, 2010, 02:23:36 PM »
I have a question for my fellow Audi brothers (and sisters...if we have any)

Last week I was experiencing some issues with the car.  I first noticed some light shuttering under load on the highway.  Later that day I was getting the stutter at idle as well and the CEL lit up.  Bad Coilpack right?  I didn't drive it after that day and swapped out the coilpack last night.  I took it for a test drive last night.  It was proably 10-15 minutes long and I'll admit I gave it the beans a bit....kept it in low gears, pulled pretty hard, kept the RPMs high to make sure I had solved the problem.  Good news is I had no stutter at all under load or at idle.  Woohoo.

However, when I got home and popped the hood I noticed how hot the Turbo was...to the point I was getting the orange glow.  I know that our turbos get hot and will glow, I just thought it took longer than 10-15 minutes of semi-hard driving to get them there.  Some things you should know...it was hot, like 93 degrees or so when I went out, and I hadn't cleared the CEL and codes yet, so perhaps the ECU was still adjusting based on the engine codes.

I spent some time on AZ last night searching, didn't find anything specific but got to wondering if I might have a bad CAT.  The CAT however wasn't glowing, just the Turbo.

Thoughts?

It really doesn't take much to get the tubo to glow a bit to where you can see it.

The heat capacity of a K03 has to be abysmal.  Couple that with EGT's over 1000F and you're turbo can probably heat up to 'glow' temperatures on a hot summer day with a solid minute of good boost.

Thanks for the replies guys.  This makes me feel a little better.  I was really worried that I'd have to replace a CAT.  I may still run it by Autozone to have the codes scanned to see if there is anything going on under the surface that isn't readily noticeable.

If it worries you too much just pull over every once in a while and douse it with ice cold water.  :)

Nice Castle!  I'll wait until the 4th of July so that the cracking and popping is at least relevant.    ;D
