A4 Re-Birth
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:01:56 AM »
Well it looks like I'm going to a stage 1 turbo upgrade. I've decided that the A4 is from now on only going to be a summer ride. No more winter fun for this B5, unless there's a ton of snow in Belle Isle. So with that being said it looks like to need to get a few upgrades. The first step was getting it lowered and thanks to Stefan it looks great. I'll post some pics of the new wheels and paint job sometime in July.

According to APR they say you should use 'their' cold air intake but I thought that cold air induction systems really didn't work too well with the 1.8 because of heat. Is that true with their Carbonio intake http://www.goapr.com/products/intake_carbonio_b5a4.html?

I've heard the regular cold air intakes didn't work that well because their was no wall or panel blocking the intake from the turbo heat. Does the Carnonio system block enough of the heat form the turbo to allow a good somewhat cold air flow? If not is there a system out their that does?

Your thoughts and or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and one last thing as far as turbo upgrades go how does APR stack up? Is this the right direction or should I go another route.

CAI's are, as far as I've heard, useless.  A whole shoe of testing with the Carbonio product as well as a few other vendors (several of which just whitelabel the carbonio) hasn't shown much of anything.

Do yourself a favor and if you aren't getting a full kit, make sure to get an decent, well-fitting FMIC.  You might also replace your radiator if its got a lot of damage, for maximum cooling.

The APR turbo upgrade is considered, by APR's terminology, to be "Stage 3".  The Stage 3 system that Sam had on his car kicked a lot of ass.  The power was awesome, and very smooth.  It was also very expensive.  It costs about 3x the price of a system from ATP.  People have also complained about the ATP software, which has changed vendors several times -- I'm not entirely sure where they are even at now.

If you can afford it, and you want the system to just work, I'd get the APR system and have Stefan put it in.  If you are doing more of the work yourself and feel good putting it together piecemeal, then you might go with an ATP kit and maybe customize a few of the components yourself.
I'm sure vinny will have some words of wisdom on this too, he's followed that stuff a lot (although mostly for the B6)
München U-Bahn.  I'll be home soon M4DH4X.

Thanks John. One of my good friends over at MIVE actually has Sam's old A4. Everything has beeen great except he had to replace his tranny recently but other than that it's been running fine.

Either way I was going to have Stefan install it. I'd like to do it but I have a feeling I would just screw it up.

How has VAST been with tuning and installations? Anyone out there dealt with them?

Vast does great work. That was the only shop i let touch my s4.  Right now would be a great time to go with APR. They are offering a discount of $500 on stage3 kits. I could maybe get you a few bucks more too.
