5 yr old battery
« on: March 03, 2007, 07:20:22 AM »
I need to change the battery in my 2002 3.0 A4.  Is this a big deal?  It looks like a Allen wrench bolt is holding the battery in.  Does anybody know what size this is?  Will this cause the electronics to go bonkers?  I've changed the battery many times in my old 5000 TQ with no problems, but it's under the seat and easy to get at.  Any advice would be welcome

if your worried about your radio settings and clock being reset from replacing your battery buy a (not sure tha actual name) little device that a 9v battery hooks up to and it plugs into your cig lighter outlet in the car and it saves those settings. i've never looked under a hood of a b6 a4 so i'm not sure exactly how its held down. on my b5 a4 its a 10mm (i think) bolt that helps hold the bracket down

GRP, I have the same car and replaced my battery with an Optima Red Top.  It think it was a 75/35.

You need an allen wrench with a ball end, and you need a long one at that.

If you have Sport Suspension then you will have a bar going across the top that will make gettting the battery out a chore, since it weights something like 60lbs!!!!!!

Anyway, you can eithe loosen the bolts holding the tower strut bar in place or you can try to lift it out by angling the battery while lifting.
I took mine out without loosening any bolts on the bar since I have sport suspension.

The other thing to note, is if you go with a smaller battery like the Optima you'll need to push the battery all the way to one side of the car before tightening down the bracket or your battery will slide.  I put a regular self taping screw in the plastic base of the battery tray to keep it from sliding towards the passenger side of the car.

Good luck with the work!

Mine is installed like this one (these are not my pics), but rather pushed to the other side of the tray.
