1990 cq troubles me!!
« on: May 31, 2010, 10:21:39 AM »
i purchased it for $700 about 3 months ago from a guy that told me it needed a head gasket. after tearing it down and doing the head gasket, timing belt, water pump, etc... i started the car and it did not run any different. it had a new rad. when i purchased it and i came to find all the cooling issues were from a faulty coolant cap!!! i never had a 20v before this one and it seems really sluggish to me. it starts to wake up at about 2700 rpm but still not impressing me. 0-60 feels like 8 or 9 seconds and there is a slight hesitation through the whole rpm band. so next i was thinking maybe it might be injectors so i was going to go with this kit- http://www.034motorsport.com/product...roducts_id=329 - not exactly sure what else the issue may be and i would like some insight from someone else that may have encountered this hesitation or am i just imagining this all and the cq is supposed to be so sluggish

the 034 injectors were a huge upgrade for my CQ and it did help with a slight hesitation.  Of course by the time I did them I had replaced just about everything else so it worked well for me.

in the process of doing the head gasket job i went through it all. water pump, complete head gasket set, timing belt, camshaft timing chain, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. drained and replaced all brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, i was trying to be thorough with it. coolant light comes on and temp does not read right though. oil pressure and temp gauge work fine... i will replace those sensors soon. when i had the motor apart the original factory cross hatching was still on the cylinder walls. i am considering going turbo with the 034 kit

but i want to make sure it is not something major before i proceed.

sounds like the motor internally is good to go for a turbo kit ;D

ok fuel filter is now done... with no improvements to be seen yet so i started checking all the injectors and #1 and #3 are bad so i just put in the order to 034 for the injector upgrade and i will keep you all posted on how well it turns out!

have you check the distributor?  Plugs?  Wires?  I chased some issues on mine back in the day and Stefan showed me the trick of spraying water on the wires to see if they are sparking.

Glad you like the injectors....when you get the problem figured out you will find your car pulls better and runs smoother than it did the day it drove off the lot.

new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor... what sensor might be screwing up when the car warms up?

Crank sensor?  In my experience they just die, but that controls spark, fuel, and timing.   Coolant temp sensor maybe?   There was a guy on Car Talk last week with a CQ that ran poorly before it was warm.  They suggested injectors or collant temp sensor.

Wow sorry I've missed this thread . . .

Another victim errr Coupe enthusiast into the rabbit hole.  ;D ;D ;D Welcome . . .

I did the 034 injector kit as well as a new oxs sensor... That alone did wonders.

Also I'd replace the fuel filter. It's probably as old as the car. Its an easy and cheap box to check off on the reliability list.

Are you local to Michigan? Reach out if you have any questions.

Good luck with the car. Post some pics when you get a chance!!!!

Cheers-->

ok heres the deal... as messed up as this sounds, it apparently took only an oil change to remedy my other issue.
i was looking over the motor for loose grounds on top of the motor then i looked beneathto see if something came unplugged when i noticed the oil and filter needed to be changed out (it has been 3hrs of run time after head job) so i grabbed a filter that i had and some oil from murray's oops O'RIELLY'S did the oil change and it runs excellent!!! i don't get it. a family of  little german gremlins must live in my cq!

i actually live in royal oak, the car is not very photogenic right now... the guy i purchased it from did not take the best care of it. he hit a guard rail with the passenger door and rear quarter, and he put some american racing ugly ass rims on it with some snow hogging tires paint is faded in the usual spots and hood has millions of little rock chips on the black paint looks like the sky at night on my hood! electrical issues with the passenger side of the car, rear speakers, tail lights on that side and the third brake light. i figure it was from him kissing the guard rail. drivers seat has come unsewn in one of the seams and the bolster has worn through to the foam. he used some type of high heat lights in the foglights because there is a black spot smack dab in the middle of both of them. if anyone out there has some parts to help me get this one back to presentable please let me know. i would love to have this parked on woodward for the dream cruise!

this is the short list;

(b4 hood, cq paasenger door (preferrably black) black leather power heated drivers seat, wiring schematics for the cq's tail lights, rear muffler, audi tool to read and erase my fault codes, set of 5 tires 205/60/15's)

Sounds like you have a bit of work ahead of you . . .  I'd sugguest contacting Joe out of Toledo. He's got a few parts listed up on audifans.com right now. I would guess he has every part you need . . . .
