My PS is still good at the moment, but what is/are the typical failure mode(s) for PS pumps?

Probably when it gets noisy would be a good time to start worrying.

As long as you check the fluid and change it that's about all you can do, right?  I replaced mine (kind of) in the space of a week by taking everything out of the reservoir and replacing it with fresh over and over again.  It's green now instead of brown.

I did mine at my second timing belt due to noise concerns.  When the old pump was pulled out the pulley was pretty wobbly, so I consider myself having avoided a potential issue there.

What --  did you have a bad experience driving a B5 before when the ps went at a bad time or something?

I think the issue is, if the PS pump grenades and starts sending metal into the rack, then the rack is probably toast too. Is your pump making a lot of noise?
