What to do before the dragstrip?
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:41:43 AM »
I'm going to the strip in 2.5 months with a bunch of friends and I'm hoping not to be ho'ed out of 12's again.  Last time out I hit 13.0 @ 108mph with a missed shift to 2nd, the other runs I did I couldn't launch at all, nothing below a 1.9 60ft.  Since then, I got an upgraded fuel pump (Walbro 255lph) and new injectors (Delphi 440cc) and a retune from Vast, which made it seem a lot quicker.  Right now it's on K04 software, has been all along on my BT and it's running pretty good.  My only problem with it is that it has a 6800rpm limiter, but I guess I can deal with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on something I can do to squeeze a few extra horsepower out of my car or to lighten it up for cheap?  I have pretty much every bolt-on that will help power, with the exception of meth which I plan to get with some of my tax refund.  So far I have my 2871r, 3" exhaust, FMIC, 3" intake, etc etc etc.  I plan on taking my backseats completely out, and filling up with at least 104octane and logging / tweaking timing on the way to the track.  Any input would be appreciated to help me hit my goal of mid 12's! ;D

Fill up with 104 octane a few days before, not the day of.  Burn off the extra weight so that you only have the fuel that you need for a few good runs and not a full tank.  There's also no real need to shift out at redline.  Our cars are known for their mid-range power as they typically run out of breath up top anyway.

might also consider  removing the air filter at the track,  remove spare, ect from  the trunk.

Well if you are dedicated, remove all loose parts in glove box/trunk/spare tire/jack. As Eric mentioned, removing the filter would help, and while you at it, might as well get rid of the right headlight for direct airflow.
I'm stocky.

Haha yea... my car doesn't run out of breath at redline like k03's do  ;D  I'll definately take the passanger headlight out, but I dunno about the filter coming off, there's a lot of rocks and stuff at lapeer.

try taking off the exhaust up to the dp. Before you do this at the track make sure your car still has enough back pressure to spool the turbo.

My exhaust is all one piece, welded together when I got it made.  But, I was thinking of getting a dump installed that I could uncap at the track, but haven't decided yet.  I'm sure less backpressure would only help my turbo.

once i can get my car onto a lift im going to see if i can fit some electric valves on my dumps. When them open there is a noticeable lag but wow it spools fast once it gets going.

Right it's not the back pressure (less = good for turbo, you don't want something fighting against it spooling!), but the WG that you have to be weary about

Fill up with 104 octane a few days before, not the day of.

Better trick:  Put 5 gallons of 104 (or higher, like 108 octane Turbo Blue) in a gas can.  Drive around normally throughout the week and tank up with 93/94 as needed, but plan on running out of gas on the way to the drag strip.  Rephrased for emphasis: your car should cough, gag, and stop running on US-23 South on the way to Milan.  ;D  Pull over, fill your tank with the previously mentioned high octane of your choice, and continue on.  This keeps you from burning expensive fuel all week long and 100% assures that you'll have a pure mix of the good stuff come race day.
