So...235 width tires suck...
« on: January 21, 2007, 03:51:53 PM »
Went outside to play a little bit, and boy oh boy did braking suck.  Acceleration and turning is actually acceptable for being on a sheet of ice, but my gosh!  Becareful out there boys!  Its fun to play outside, but don't run into anything :)  Have fun in the snow!
I'm stocky.

should be the other way vinny. You want a smaller width for turning. And iirc larger for braking

technically speaking, you want narrower for both.  At any rate, the turning is fine with the car in the snow, well under my standards.  But braking ? :/ lol

technically speaking you want narrow to cut thru the snow to get to traction.  Vinny, what are you doing with 235s on your car this time of year??

Vin, I went with 225/45/17's on my Avant. I have no problem at all. Remember too, no matter what tires you have, you can't beat the laws of physics. Stopping almost 4000 lbs. requires a light touch and plenty of room. I learned the hard way trying to stop the Land Rover which was @ 6,000 lbs., that was a lot of fun. ;D

Com'on Vin,
My truck has 275/60/17 with no tred, I still drive  it that way through winter.  AND it is  only 2 wheel  drive,  no weight in the back, (no  front left at the moment either, but that's another story)

I was playing around on dry pavement and the snow tires lost traction (very easily) and I hit the curb going 30-40mph.  Ouch.  Thanks to Stefan the repair was QUICK and painless.  The lower control arm was bent pretty good and I still need a new wheel bearing.  The wheels look great now with a 2" abrasion mark on all 10 of the spokes!  Snow tires are AWESOME on snow and ice but on dry pavement they are TERRIBLE.  This might be the last year with snow tires for me.

i have 215/55/16 tires on now, and just received new 235/45/17 tires today. but when i compared the two side by side, the 235 tire actually looks almost the same width as the 215 tire?? WTF, where is the 2cm difference???   >:(

That's because it's sectional width and not tread width.  Plus this can vary depending on the rim width the tire is mounted.  235/45/17's are supposed to be mounted on 8" width rims and ideally the 215/55/16's are on 7" OR 7.5" wide wheels.  If the 215's are mounted on 8" wide wheels, the contact patch will be more than intended.

Everything you wanted to know about tire sizing and effects of different diameters to section width, etc.:

Tire size calculator (assuming you have proper width wheel for tire).  Great for plus/minus sizing:
