2000 Audi A6 Will Not Start Please Help
« on: July 21, 2008, 07:29:19 AM »
It has been starting hard for about a week.  Turns over but does not seem to be sparking.  It sat in the driveway for the weekend, was going to drop it off to Stephan last night and it would not start.  Thought it may have flooded (as I do not know sh-t about cars) but it was not starting this morning either.

Please help.

If you can give more details about what happens (noises/actions) as you start the car that would help in tracking down the problem. :)

It turns over but there seems not to be a spark.  No sign that it is going to go.  The cadence of the starting sound seems normal.  If that happened on a older car I would say it doesn't seem to have the spark.

Before it stopped starting, when it did start did it take a while for it to run normally?   Was there some smoke after it did finally start?   My car doesn't appreciate me pulling it in and out of the garage multiple times without letting it run a for a bit.

If you can get a VAG com on the car it may show issues with the coilpacks.  If they are all complaining theres a better chance its the supply for all the packs - which I'm assuming is what sam suggested.

It is a 2.8 but when I tried to do as Stephan advised (which was to pull the plugs and put a little oil in each cylinder, I was so pissed to find the plugs recessed so far I could not get at them, I could have blasted the next German engineer I saw.  My God that is ridiculus.  Shit.  No wonder there is a class action against Audi with the BS on the keys.  I am surprised that you can remove the wheel without an authorized dealer.

So I had to get a flat bed (cuz you can't tow a quattro...of course) and have it carried to the authorized dealer.  They are nice cars but for Chrissake.

The special "spark plug socket" that came with my $75 tool kit from Costco worked on the 1.8T block and I thought those were pretty far down.

Welcome to the year 2000. All twin cam vehicles have recessed spark plugs, doesn't matter if its a ford, gm or yugo.  You can use a simple plug socket with an extension to reach it.

And BTW that stupid ass who sued Audi over the Keys - There's a reason that Audi doesn't want every Tom, Dick and Harriet being able to re-program the keys - ITS FOR SECURITY!!!!!

The problem to me is not with that "stupid ass".  It is with Audi's exclusivity. They will choke guys like Stephan out of business.  He replaced an instument panel in my vehicle.  Many Audi vehicles he would not be able to do it because it is coded.  Audi will not release the code.  So what they (Audi) are effectively doing is dictating who works on my car.  That is unacceptable.  As last I checked, it was my car, not theirs.  I trust my mechanic more than any dealership.  Period.

I'm just going to go ahead and disagree with you.

If its mechanical you're right everyone should be able to work on it - if its security - Which protects YOU in the end its the dealer.

I just got a letter about this in the mail. Audi will now have to reprogram your keys if you lose one because THANKS TO THE LAWSUIT anyone can reprogram it.

I guess I have a pretty sh-tty taste in my mouth from my last trip to the dealership.  I just feel strongly that if I purchase something, I should have the freedom to take it where I want to whomever I want.  The problem with this key thing is that once it runs out you cannot use the product you purchased and you have no choice to take it anywhere but Audi.  So it seem to me to be a lack of choice issue.

I see your point about security but I am not a huge fan of the government listening in on my phone conversations either regardless of whether or not I am doing something illegal.  The response of "I have nothing to hide" encourages handing over personal freedoms.

So if you're against freedom then so be it.  Really just kidding I do see your point and we can agree to disagree.
