E85
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:58:01 AM »
What's the verdict on E85 running in Audi's? Has anyone looked into what it would take to convert to running E85? Thoughts?

I currently have an 03 A6 3.0L and saw on ebay a conversion kit claiming to be very simple and effective. I have also heard that there are extensive mod's required to make this possible.

The maximum ethanol content that you can run in your Audi is 10%, E85 is 85% ethanol.
The problem with ethanol is that it is corrosive and does not have the same lubrication qualities as gasoline.

In order to run E85 you would need new fuel lines, fuel pump, injectors and software for the ECU.

I wouldn't trust an Ebay kit to "convert" your car.   Like Sam said, it's not simple.  Not to mention it makes no sence to turn food into fuel (using government subsidies too)- another topic altogether....

I won't even go to Sunoco any more due to their enthanol content.  Too many CEL's to deal with.  It's a crock anyway.  More expensive to produce, poor gas mileage, it's hurting our food economy, oh and it's corrosive.  Can anyone else see the up side here?

The upside is that if you farm corn you're making money.

The price of wheat is increasing daily because farmers are switching to corn - so farm wheat and you're making money.  It's going to take some time for the market to stabilize.

Oh and by the way while no-one was looking the ENRON loophole bill passed.

In a nutshell the crooks at ENRON had lobbied to take energy trading out of the watchful eye of the SEC and government allowing speculative oil trading to run rampant and pushing up the cost of oil.

Running Sunnoco 94 daily with  no problems at all... Beside the point, there is someone who did a e85 transplant on audizine with a b6 a4 1.8t, and there really isn't that much benefits.
I'm stocky.

The only thing I'd worry about would be the fuel pump.
I used to run 94 in the stage III.

Since ethanol has a higher octane- 100-105 you could in theory run higher boost with a special E85 program.

Yes sir you can...i ran 70% E85 and 15% 93 on my GIAC 100 octane race file when i had my K04 setup, it hauled ass!  I datalogged and the CF's were under control and the ecu corrected for fuel automatically. My injector pulsed widened up a bit.

Vastperformance??  :-\
I was on them for 3 months, week after week, trying to get a custom tune for my GTRS setup.  Eventually they recommended that i consider other options...thats why im REVO powered and never looking back.  REVO provides support for upgraded hardware options...GT30, 2.0L Strokers, High revving head, the option for fine tuning using the SPS controller.

I hate to bash but there just wasnt any love for the fellow B6'er.

I have driven a modified E85 A4 turbo and it was a hoot.  Not sure what was all involved, but I can check for you if you like.  Brendan Rudack of Apikol in Colorado had his modded where you'd flip a switch and yeowza!! Could run either. WG Remembers.  He had it at Steamboat last year.

I just read today (second article) that Ricardo is developing an engine that will increase boost when it detects E85 ethanol in the tank.   They say a 3.2L V6 with turbo and direct injection can make 450hp and 660 lb*ft with E85 vs 400 hp and 570 lb*ft with gas.
