Need Some Engine Help Please
« on: May 04, 2008, 06:22:49 PM »
I replace my engine coolant temperature sensor today and cleared the fault code using VAG-COM.  The car fired up fine and was good for a couple minutes then it started to mis-fire.  I shut down right away and did another code read and came up with this:

Sunday,04,May,2008,17:02:57:27540
VAG-COM Version: Release 704.1

                Address 01: Engine
Control Module Part Number: 8E0 909 518 AF
  Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT     G   0001
           Software Coding: 0016701
            Work Shop Code: WSC 12598
2 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
        P0300 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
16686 - Cylinder 2: Misfire Detected
        P0302 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

Readiness: 0110 1101

I check all my plugs (BRK6E) and they're all gapped to 0.028".  Is the coil pack on cyliner 2 shot?  Is the best way to check by swapping with another cylinder to see if the misfire moves?  Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Joe

Talked with Vince a few minutes ago and he suggested a coil pack, sure enough he's correct.  I moved the coil pack from cylinder #2 to cylinder #3 and the misfire moved to cylinder #3.  Think I should be set once I get some new coil packs.  Thanks Vince for the help.

Sounds too coincidental - check the connection to the ECT again.

All European in Royal Oak  is a good place to get coil packs.  Legato got his from there when he had a similar issue.  I take it your the guy Vinny was refering to at dinner that couldn't make it due to coil pack issues?  Bummer you couldn't make it.

I moved the suspect coilpack to both cylinder 1 and 4 and it moved the misfire to that cylinder, so I think I'll start by replacing the bad coil.  Is it best to replace all 4 coilpacks at onces or should I just buy 2, one for replacement and the other as a spare to keep in my car?  Is it bad to intermix new and old coils?  Thanks guys.

Make sure you ONLY get the Hitachi coil packs, and NO OTHER BRAND!!!  There have been some major issues with the bolt-on coil packs exploding/not surviving.  I heard this from Stefan, as I was planning to change my coilpacks in the future.

So should I not get the ones from All European then?

Only if they're Hitachi.  This is advice I just got from Stefan.  But I do know that when dealers are in a pinch, they go to All European.

If I were you, I would just order a set off ecstuning "Hitachi ignition pack solution" http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Audi&engine=1.8T&model=B6%20A4&submodel=Quattro&category=Engine.  Most people seem to have pretty good luck with those.  And then use what you have in your engine as "spares".  But i suppose in the meantime, get one from a dealership, or save a few bucks and get it from a VW dealership.

EDIT:  You might as well replace all 4, Two died on me at first, and then the other two died in a week and a half...Then again, this was during my bad luck streak...
