Old and busted

New Hotness

Still waiting for the turbo, old one wouldn't work, and was on it's last legs.

I sent them another email over the weekend, but I haven't heard anything yet.

If not, then I'm going Standalone, not sure what yet though.

John,
It's OK, you can put the M5 in your sig- we won't pick on you too much  ;D

Glad to see you're working on it again.  Was that turbo used before?  What caused it to go bad?

I've got a Scorpion exhaust on the car now, with the "DTM style" tips.  I think it's 2.5" all the way, with dual 3" tips.

The only thing is, where it mates up with the stock DP, I cut the coupler off, so that I could mate it up with my 3" downpipe.  I'd be willing to sell it cheap if someone is interested.

I'll also have an ATP manifold, turbo, tial wastegate, DP (made for ABA block though) and some misc stuff if someone was thinking about going homebrew BT.

ok ok, I'll put the M5 in my sig.  Done.

the turbo I had on there was a T3/T4 50trim, almost 5 years old, so it had a bit of abuse on it.  I'm guessing not being tuned might have had a lot to do with it.  It can probably be saved with a rebuild, I think it's pretty cheap to rebuild (new bushings, thrust washer)

I got the new turbo in, mocked up, I haven't reclocked the centersection or compressor housing yet.

turns out the wastegate dump tube is slightly off, so I have to send back the DP to be fixed, but I'm going to take the opportunity to get rid of the 5-bolt flange and upgrade to V-band outlet (long story why I didn't do this in the first place)

I sent a couple more emails to VAST, but still no response, so I'm still undecided on what to do for tuning.

Couple of updated pics

ok so I don't know much about turbos physically, just how to deal with them in a thermodynamic system :P

so what is going on with those 'circular' shaped holes cut around the inside ring
i hope that was a reasonable description of something i dont know what it is

Edit cause im bored and feel like posting more about these cause they are cool... it's called a ported shroud. they are mostly used on large turbo/small motor setups. Air goes in like normal and comes out the holes. It is designed to prevent surging. So pretty much u can run higher boost at lower rpms

Yep, it's an anti-surge housing.  If you ever look at a compressor map, you will see the surge line on the left.

Surge Line:  The map width is limited on the left by the surge line. This is basically "stalling" of the air flow at the compressor inlet. With too small a volume flow and too high a pressure ratio, the flow can no longer adhere to the suction side of the blades, with the result that the discharge process is interrupted. The air flow through the compressor is reversed until a stable pressure ratio with positive volume flow rate is reached, the pressure builds up again and the cycle repeats. This flow instability continues at a fixed frequency and the resultant noise is known as "surging".

There is also the case when the turbo starts providing more air than the engine can handle, the best example is when the throttle closes.  Normally, the BOV will take care of this problem.

A ported housing allows air to bypass the outlet and enter the inlet.  Big turbos on small engines can drift to the left of the surge line on a compressor map.  In theory, a ported housing also allows quicker spoolup when/if this happens.  It's also a nice fail-safe in case your BOV goes bad.

Cool, yeah, that's the email I was using, most of my emails were with kurt, but I think the last couple I cc'd mike on.

I didn't want to call them, since their website says to use the phone as a last resort, I didn't want to call and bug them if they were in the middle of something.
