Subaru Legacy transmission binds on turns
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:18:15 AM »
1998 Legacy 2.5GT automatic

When turning left or right in parking lot situations the transmission feels like its binding up.  I'd compare it to driving a 4x4 truck in four-low and turning the wheel all the way over to lock.

Bad center diff maybe?  Possibly permanently locked and no longer limited slip?

Yes it binds and with added power (throttle) it will move forward, but it 'crunches', for lack of a better term.  It feels like two meshed gears are not quite seated properly and we're jumping one tooth at a time.

Ide check the CV joints. The 4eat that year doesn't have a real center diff, If you put the fuse in for FWD does it still do it?

I will check the CVs this weekend. I know that if I put the car in neutral I did not see the same symptoms.  Thanks for your help guys; I will post follow-up info in a few days.

If that is not the case, then it could be the duty solenoid "C" sticking. THe "center diff" in that car is just an electronic transfer clutch. The clutches are normally together (locked) by default, and the solenoid pulls them apart to allow slippage. So if the solenoid fails they will be locked 50/50 front rear. This has been known to cause some binding.

Ill see if I can dig up some info on it...

Edit: Found the article I was looking for

And some background info form the endwrench archives http://www.endwrench.com/archive/sysdrive.html

Sorry about the slow response.  Somewhere along the way my second daughter was born and things got hectic.  :D

I have not yet checked the CVs, but inserting a fuse into the FWD holder ends my problem.  What does this tell us?  Check the rears CVs first?
