Well about to tackle a rear hub/bearing assembly tomorrow.  When the part was shipped it had some fuzzy stuff from the packing material in the box on it.  Manual says to clean hub/spindle with any high flash pt. solvent.  So... what exactly am I looking at here?  Brake cleaner?  Need something locally available.

BTW I hope some of my old chemistry profs don't read this message, they would be very dissapointed!  If I can remember flash pt. is the low temp that vapor can be ignited?

I just hope this breaker bar is good enough to take off the spindle nut.  Oh man  :P :-\

If this is on the A4 you'll need a press or a hub puller.

Thanks!  That's what I suspected.

This is not for an A4... AFAIK the whole thing **should** just slide off once I remove the spindle nut and brake (or break is it  :P ) hardware.  I'll have to rent a Tq wrench from an auto parts place for the job, so I might see if they have a slide hammer/hub puller or something I can use that won't break (or brake) anything

They just want you to clean it with a solvent that will evaporate quickly and not still be on the part when you lubricate it for installation.  Brake cleaner, paint thinner, or alcohol all have a high flash point.  Meaning they quickly turn into a gas from liquid by evaporation.

LOL!

Well that was pretty painless for the most part... just like an extended brake job.  My rear bearing only comes as a fully assembled hub/bearing unit so I don't have to mess with a press.  I had a hell of a time unstaking that nut for some reason though, I guess the factory really jams that thing down and the area is way to small to fit a normal sized screwdriver in there to pry it back!

I'm so happy no more WWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH when I drive anymore.  It got REALLY loud.  I'm also happy about the DIY.  My wrenching confidence is going up!  Now if I only wasn't deathly afraid of messing with belts...  :icon_rr:
