1.8L oil filter sizes?
« on: June 07, 2007, 12:23:22 PM »
I've heard to use the higher capacity (volume) oil filters for the 1.8T...
what is the Dealer using? Are they all the larger type now?

I am about to do my own oil change and want to know how much more oil is
needed over the 4.5 quarts in the manual, or since this is an (B6) '05 does it already
have the larger filter (when was the change made??).

What is the total length of the larger filter. I bought a Fram and it is the same
length as the one on there now, but I'm still not sure if I have the small one
or the larger one... >:(

It's an oil filter off of Jetta TDi I think.  I've been using that size for a couple years now.

:iamwithstupid:  I use it on the 90s, too.  Nothing like the V8 one, though, which I think holds 1.5 qts (see below):

using that big of a oil filter on the 1.8t might have clearance issue. iirc looking under jaustin's 1.8t there wasnt much room with the big filter he uses

No, the one pictured is from my V8. ;D  The diesel one is wider than the standard A4 one and I don't believe has any clearance issues.

The TDI filter fits just fine. I believe even Audi is using it at the dealers now because of the old sludging problems on the 1.8T.

Which one does Steffan use for 1.8Ts? I know its made by Mann, same as OEM, and it seems to be on the larger side.

If you're using a Fram, don't get the cheapest orange one, at least get the gray one.   Check the package too- sometimes people swap them for the orange ones....

Here are the outside dimensions:

Height/length: 5 1/4" or 13.3 cm
Diameter:  3 3/4" or 9.5 cm
Circumference: 11 1/2" or 29.2 cm

Don't know what the stock size is (guessing the same except diameter of 3 1/8" and circumference 9 3/8" or 24 cm).  You can't be too big --well you can, but that's for an entirely different discussion group  ;)

Ok, thanks. What I also wanted to know is if using the larger filter, how much more oil do I have to add.
I suppose I could just keep adding and checking the dipstick after running it a few seconds to fill up the filter.
I was hoping to dust off "pie" now that I have the dimensions, but I'm sure the guts take up space...
Or can I assume the TDI uses the same oil pan and just use the oil capacity of the TDI?

Am I making too much of this? Audi types seem to be pretty anal (the last two words should probably
never appear in the same sentence).

its from a passat w8 diesel -- there is a clearance issue, its a tight fit - but it definitely fits.  not a whole lot of extra oil is required.
it would be senseless to not use it imo -- why not have more filter for your oil?

Exactly!  Mann or Mahle (sp?) work best!  I have heard horror stories about Fram.  Not to mention, I use the OEM filter to stay safe.
