Extremely rare cars!
« on: December 15, 2006, 11:14:03 PM »
I just uploaded some pictures of some extremely rare cars I got to see yesterday.  They are in my gallery here:

http://motorcityaudi.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=16&page=1&sort=na

When was the last time you saw the first Daytona Coupe, an early original 289 Cobra, a Can-Am Porsche 917 race car, along with the Cobra and GR-1 concept cars all in 1 room together?

(The Audi content is the Porsche 917.  It says Audi right under Porsche.)

How?  Where? When? WHAT!?!?!?! That is really cool.

It was Manfred Rumple's retirement party.  He spent the first 9 years of his career at Porsche, and one of his projects was working on the suspension of the 917 race cars.  He came to Ford and did a lot of projects there as well, including the Shelby Cobra and GR-1 concept cars.  So one of the organizers of the party made some calls and contacted the owners of the 917 and the Daytona Coupe to see if we could borrow them for a night.  The owners had heard of Manfred and the work he had done, so he agreed to let us borrow them.  A truck picked up the 917 in North Carolina, then coninued up to Philadelphia to pick up the Daytona Coupe.  They were then brought to the Hyatt in Dearborn Thursday for the party.  After the party they were loaded up and taken back.

The Ford concept cars were probably easier to get a hold of since most of the people there had worked on them.

Having been involved in the build of the new shelby cobra's, I can only hope that you found the european vehicles more appealing.............but, I digress
